Using Text-to-Speech (TTS) in Unwritten

Published on October 10, 2025

Unwritten lets your stories speak for themselves.
With Text-to-Speech (TTS), you can listen to scenes unfold — complete with narration and player actions — turning your story into an immersive, voice-driven experience.

🎧 1. What TTS Does

TTS (Text-to-Speech) reads story text aloud using realistic computer voices.
In Unwritten, it’s part of the storytelling flow — allowing you to hear the world and your own choices as if you were inside the story.

🧠 Note: TTS voices come from your device or browser, not from Unwritten itself.
This means the available voices and quality may vary depending on whether you’re using a PC, phone, or browser (like Edge, Chrome, or Safari).

🗣️ 2. Dual-Voice Experience

Unwritten supports two distinct voices for extra immersion:

  • Narrator Voice — tells the story and sets the mood.
  • Action Voice — speaks your player choices and actions, as if you’re part of the scene.

This creates a natural rhythm between the storyteller and the player — similar to a dramatized audiobook.

⚙️ 3. Accessing Voice Settings

On any story or game page, look for the mic icon 🔊 in the bottom bar — this opens the Voice Settings panel.

Here you can:

  • Select your Narrator Voice
  • Select your Action Voice
  • Turn Auto Play on/off to automatically read each new message
  • Turn Auto Scroll & Highlight on/off
    • If supported by your browser, text will scroll and highlight word-by-word while being spoken
  • Click Stop Voice to stop playback anytime
  • Click Read All to read all messages currently displayed on the page from the beginning

You can adjust or test your setup freely while staying in the story.

💬 4. Per-Message Voice Controls

Each message has its own mic button 🎙️ — press it to read that single message.
This is great for replaying specific lines, testing a new voice, or resuming from any part of the story.

💻 5. Recommended Browser

For PC users, Microsoft Edge offers the best free TTS experience:

  • Edge includes high-quality online voices like Jenny Online, Aria Online, and Guy Online.
  • These voices are clear, expressive, and can read long passages smoothly.
  • They require no setup — Unwritten will detect them automatically when opened in Edge.

Other browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) also work, but they rely on your device’s built-in voices, so sound quality and voice options can differ.

🌟 6. Tips for the Best Experience

  • Use headphones for immersive storytelling.
  • Pick a strong or emotional Narrator Voice and a lighter Action Voice for contrast.
  • Adjust reading speed if your browser supports it.
  • Keep the Unwritten tab active — some browsers pause audio when inactive.
  • Experiment — each device and browser has its own voice styles and accents!

🧩 7. Troubleshooting

Issue Try This
No sound Check device volume and browser permissions for “Autoplay” or “Audio.”
TTS not available Some devices or browsers don’t include built-in voices — try Microsoft Edge or update your OS.
Voice stops early Use Edge online voices or click Read All again — local voices may have character limits.
Auto highlight not working Not all browsers support synchronized word highlighting — try Edge or Chrome.
Voices not saving Re-open the Voice Settings panel — some options reset per session or browser.

💡 Remember: Unwritten doesn’t include or control TTS voices — it simply connects to what your device or browser provides.

💡 8. Why Use TTS in Unwritten

  • Turns your story into an immersive, audiobook-like experience
  • Perfect for listening while relaxing or multitasking
  • Great for accessibility and readability
  • Helps writers proofread their stories aloud
  • Makes every scene feel alive with narration and action voices

🔒 9. Privacy Note

Unwritten doesn’t record, store, or send your text to any external service.
If you use browser-based online voices (like Microsoft Edge’s), your text may be temporarily processed by that browser’s TTS system, but not saved or shared by Unwritten.
