Unwritten Spotlight: The “Facts” Feature

Unwritten Spotlight: The “Facts” Feature

Published on August 30, 2025

At SnuglyCloud, we’re always looking for ways to give players more control over their interactive stories. That’s why Unwritten now includes the Facts Manager, a tool designed to help you guide your story and maintain consistency even in long, sprawling narratives.

Where to Find It

While using Unwritten, you’ll notice your usual chat-style interface: the AI presents scenes, you respond via choices or free-form text, and the story evolves with every interaction. Once a story reaches over 50 messages (or 25 exchanges, counting both AI and player responses), a new button appears under the input area: “Facts Manager.”

Clicking this opens a side panel where you can add, edit, or delete facts about your story world.

How Facts Work

Facts are persistent pieces of information that are included in the AI prompt whenever the story continues. They act as a memory system for your story, keeping track of essential details that might otherwise be forgotten during long sessions. Unlike the AI’s built-in memory, which can lose minor details after a few hundred messages, the Facts Manager lets you maintain consistency and control over your narrative.

For example, you can:

  • Maintain character traits:
    • “The protagonist is known as the only warrior in town.”
    • “The main character always carries a silver locket given by their mother.”
  • Set world details or backstory:
    • “The protagonist was born in a village called ‘Nygamud.’”
    • “Magic in this world is extremely rare and feared by villagers.”
  • Guide AI narration style:
    • “User likes the narrator to use a soft and melancholic tone.”
    • “Scenes in forests should feel mysterious and slightly ominous.”
  • Manage story rules or outcomes:
    • “Dragons cannot enter the city gates.”
    • “The village festival happens every third week of the month.”
  • Have a bit of fun or bend the rules:
    • “The protagonist is invincible.” (Well… that’s cheating, but hey, it’s your story!)

Why This Is Useful

The Facts Manager isn’t just about keeping your story straight—it opens up new possibilities for creative storytelling:

  1. Consistency Across Long Stories: Keep track of important plot points and character traits, so your story doesn’t accidentally contradict itself.
  2. Player-Directed Storytelling: You decide which details the AI should prioritize, making the narrative more personalized.
  3. Flexible Narrative Tweaks: Add or change facts to explore “what if” scenarios without rewriting the story from scratch.
  4. Enhanced Roleplay & Worldbuilding: Maintain lore, relationships, or unique rules that define your world.
  5. Tone and Style Control: Influence how the AI describes scenes, interacts with characters, or conveys emotion.
  6. Experiment with Story Mechanics: Test alternate outcomes, unlock hidden powers, or introduce dramatic twists.
  7. Meta & Playful Storytelling: Have fun adding “rule-breaking” or whimsical facts, like giving the hero quirky traits or impossible powers—it’s your narrative playground.

Whether you’re a writer experimenting with interactive fiction, a game master crafting a persistent world, or a player who loves shaping your story, Unwritten’s Facts Manager is a powerful way to keep your story coherent, rich, and fully under your control.

Note from my experience: Sometimes the AI won’t immediately follow the new facts exactly as you added them. However, it often gradually steers the details toward your facts, helping maintain consistency over time.
